I am really interested in the science behind the placebo effect. essentially it just boils down to mind over matter, doesn't it? if a person just believes hard enough, or is even brainwashed into believing something, it has potential to cure them. if so, would it be possible to brainwash terminal cancer patients into thinking that they have been cured, so that they have some hope of living? the placebo effect has been used many times in history, for example sham surgeries tricking people into thinking that they have been operated on, and then getting better. the ethics behind the placebo effect is quite questionable, which leads us to the placebo paradox. it may not be ethical to use the placebo effect in medicine (i.e. tricking patients), but it may also be unethical to not use something that might cure the patient...
