I see a lone moth on the inside of my window screen. It is fluttering all over the window, dancing in the pale moonlight, searching for the way out, back into the dark night where it belongs. And yet, as I watch over this creature, beating its wings frantically, travelling back and forth, back and forth, over the wire screen, I cannot help but think, ‘It’s useless. You’ll never get out. Never.’
No matter how hard we try, sometimes it seems like we can never achieve that goal. And yet, the moth flutters on, dancing here and there, for the freedom it wants. I shake my head in pity and leave the room.
A minute later, I return to find that the moth is nowhere to be seen. I search all over the window for it, and then laugh at my own ignorance. The trail of the moth’s silvery dust winds all over the window, sparkling in the black of the night. And at the end of the trail, is a tiny hole in the screen.
